How have various groups sought to change the federal government’s role in American political, social, and economic life?
Despite the well-meaning intentions of John Winthrop in 1630, the United States hasn't always been a shining city upon a hill. Actually, at times, America has really gotten it wrong: the Dred Scott decision, Jim Crow, etc. And there's plenty more, to be sure. Oftentimes, though, in those moments of darkness, an individual or group assumes the mantle of leadership and takes the United States back in the direction that John Winthrop intended almost 400 years ago.
Using this theme, we will explore the role that various groups have had in affecting government policy, especially as they relate to matters of equity in the political, social, and economic spheres. As with many other disciplines that fall under the Social Studies umbrella, there are many different viewpoints on the issues.
