How have changes in markets, transportation, and technology affected American society?
Theme #2: Work, Exchange, and Technology gets at the root of some of the major changes in which our economy and our lives have changed over the last few hundred years. Obviously, technology is easy to notice: we no longer grow crops almost entirely by hand, and everything from the internal combustion engine to the air conditioning unit has made our lives easier (not to mention the microchip allowing you to view this website). But technology, as with work and exchange, is not always so easy to understand.
The changes in American economic habits have had drastic second- and third-order effects on both American and global society. In class, we will explore some of those changes and postulate about whether our society is better off for them.
